🏈 New Rules Taking The Fun Out Of Football? Not So Fast!

Many view the NFL's new rule changes as a clampdown on celebrations, and that's not the case.

Watch the Red-Hot Phillies Battle the Star-Studded Dodgers

Kevin Sweeney

As expected, Cade Cunningham and Jalen Green put on a show in Las Vegas last night (though I had as much fun watching Alperen Sengün). Hoops fans looking for their summer fix will get plenty more tonight, with several 2021 lottery picks in action. There's also plenty of baseball to dive into as teams head into the stretch run. And, for you football fans, there's even something to get you excited.

Here's what I'm watching tonight.

MUST WATCH

Los Angeles Dodgers at Philadelphia Phillies

Trea Turner had one of the slickest slides I've ever seen after scoring in the sixth inning last night.

Gary A. Vasquez/USA TODAY Sports

With the Mets' recent collapse and the Braves' season-long mediocrity, the door has been propped wide open for the Phillies to make a move in the NL East. They finally did with a recent eight-game winning streak snapped last night in a shutout loss to the Dodgers. But they still sit a game ahead of Atlanta and two ahead of New York atop their underwhelming division.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers are the favorite to repeat as World Series champions at every sportsbook I can find but sit four games out of the NL West race. They're not perfect, as my colleague Tom Verducci wrote last week. If they can't make a move soon, they'll need to win the wild-card game to get into the Division Series. And no matter how deep and talented this Dodgers team is, anything can happen in a single-elimination game.

New Phillies starter Kyle Gibson, who has been superb since being acquired at the trade deadline, will face off with David Price in this one.

HIDDEN GEM

NBA Summer League: Toronto Raptors vs. Golden State Warriors

He may not pour in buckets like Jalen Green or Cade Cunningham, but basketball junkies will love the energy and enthusiasm top Raptors draft selection Scottie Barnes plays with. The do-it-all forward loves to dig in on the defensive end and is great in transition. SI's Jeremy Woo is in Vegas for Summer League and described the early returns from Barnes's debut Sunday as "highly promising."

Barnes's competitive edge will surely be on full display against a fellow high draft pick in Jonathan Kuminga, who'll suit up for the Warriors. Knowing Barnes, there's a good chance he makes this game one of the highest-intensity battles of the entire event. It certainly won't rival the "Malice at the Palace" documentary I watched last night but expect a lot of physicality in this one … particularly for a glorified exhibition.
