Barcelona, where Messi spent the first 17 seasons of his club career and scored 474 goals, made an emotional appeal of its own to bring him back to Spain for a swan song. MLS, however, had an ace in the hole in the form of the largest company in the world, which is in the first year of its $2.5 billion, 10-year commitment to be the exclusive home of every MLS match. Given the impact that bringing Messi to MLS could have on subscriptions to the MLS Season Pass service on Apple TV, the company didn’t hesitate to cut him in on the deal.
